    We are seeking an experience, self-directed and highly motivated Laboratory Manager to join our Microbiology Laboratory at Rush University Medical Center!

    Challenge: Employees of the Microbiology Lab have the opportunity to collaborate with the team of Infectious Disease, Infection Control and Epidemiology.  In our lab, your skills will be challenged to isolate and identify bacteria, mycobacteria, funguses, viruses and yeast from complex specimens collected from patients with a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Education:  As part of an academic medical center, Microbiology Lab professionals at Rush have the opportunity to assist with teaching pathology residents and medical laboratory science students.

    Position Highlights:

    • Assumes direct managerial responsibilities for the Microbiology Lab. As part of the laboratory leadership team, assist with developing, monitoring and providing leadership for the financial, contracting, regulatory, accreditation and client services policies and procedures for all the clinical and anatomic laboratories.
    • The Laboratory Manager works closely with the Chair of Pathology, Administrative Director, Laboratory Directors, Laboratory Managers and supervisory staff.
    • This position provides back-up for and acts as the Administrative Director in the Administrative Director's absence.

     

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Manages a 24/7 operation with 27 testing personnel with 3 direct supervisory reports.
    • Meets with vendors to negotiate contracts for services and supplies. Develops and maintains a strong working knowledge of the contractual language negotiated in these contracts.
    • Ensures smooth operation of the laboratory's testing, reporting and billing for the RUMC in- and outpatients, research and outreach clients.
    • Ensures any identified regulatory or accreditation deficiencies are corrected in a timely and accurate manner.
    • Provides leadership to the Client Services area; meet with clients and potential clients as needed; work closely with the staff to ensure efficient and cost effective service to clients.
    • Provides guidance and oversight to ensure consistency across all the laboratories in hiring practices, compensation, promotions and disciplinary actions.
    • Works closely with the Chair of Pathology, Directors, Laboratory Managers and supervisory staff in developing, updating and monitoring the achievement of long range goals and objectives for the Department of Pathology/Rush Medical Laboratories.
    • Participates, as needed, in the provision of continuing education and in-service programs for the staff.
    • Serves as an instructor of Rush University; prepares and gives formal management related lectures to the medical laboratory science students and/or pathology residents; maintains availability to mentor and advice Health Systems Management students on specific projects or assignments.
    • Act as the representative for the Department of Pathology/Rush Medical Laboratory on any RUMC, Rush Health, Rush System for Health or other appropriate committee, sub-committee or task force.

    Position Qualifications Include:

    • Bachelors of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) or equivalent science or healthcare field is required
    • B.A., M.P.H., Master's in Health Systems Management (HSM) or MS in MLS is highly desired.
    • Will consider candidates that are currently pursuing one of these advanced degrees.
    • Certification as an MT(ASCP) or eligible is highly desired
    • Minimum of five years of experience in a laboratory management or supervisory role, or another healthcare setting is required; documented equivalent experience may be considered.
    • Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills required.
    • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
    • Experience with developing and maintaining budgets and understanding and interpreting financial reports.
    • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with individuals at all levels in the organization.
    • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines; ability to prioritize projects and workload independently. Ability to work effectively in a complex environment.
